Ghost Town Anthology
Filmed in grainy 16mm and featuring superb sound design, Ghost Town Anthology takes place in Irénée-les-Neiges, population 215. The violent death of 21-year-old Simon Dubé has affected everyone and left his family shattered. The mayor angrily rejects offers of help from Montréal welfare workers. ‘We’re all adults here,’ she says. Côté’s elegant screenplay glides into metaphysical territory when dead townsfolk suddenly return to life. Cleverly steering clear of horror movie tropes, Côté creates an absorbing mood piece about collective reaction to trauma and the pressures that can turn thriving communities into ghost towns. Official selection, Berlinale Competition.
