Friends By Chance
Alessandro (rising star Andrea Carpenzano) hangs out with his equally aimless friends and torments his father with his lack of ambition. At the same time, he is involved in a secret affair with the mother of one of his best friends. Giorgio (Giuliano Montaldo) is a 'forgotten poet' with Alzheimer’s disease who lives alone in a flat with very little company. Alessandro reluctantly takes on the paid job of accompanying Giorgio on his afternoon strolls, and though the two could not be more different, gradually they form a bond. And when Giorgio’s fading memory delivers up a long-lost treasure, adventure beckons for the odd couple. A funny and gentle film, Friends By Chance is a lovely depiction of an inter-generational friendship.
A particularly heartfelt piece that mixes autobiographical elements and novel-esque invention…with endearment and polite humour. The encounter/clash between two worlds and generations so far apart gives rise to plenty of comedy and irony. – Vittoria Scarpa, Cineeuropa
