Clara Law’s comic drama follows the fortunes of a Hong Kong family that immigrates to sunburnt Aussie suburbia. Australia’s first-ever submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars.
Floating Life (SFF 1996) is as fresh and emotionally rewarding as when it first delighted audiences. It's the year before the 1997 Hong Kong handover. Ma and Pa Chan have decided to emigrate with teenage sons Yue and Chau and live with thoroughly westernised daughter Bing in her soulless suburban McMansion. Meanwhile, eldest son Gar Ming is still drifting aimlessly in HK. Eldest daughter Yen is battling major feng shui issues at her family home in Munich. This funny and touching story about dislocation and family relationships is wonderfully performed and lovingly crafted by filmmakers Clara Law and Eddie Fong (Autumn Moon, The Goddess of 1967). It represents a turning point in Asian-Australian cinema. Silver Leopard, Locarno Film Festival 1996.

Presented by the National Film and Sound Archive's digital restoration program – NFSA Restores – reviving our cinema icons.
A potent portrayal of a family cut adrift from its roots… graced with an original and invigorating approach that’s a credit to all concerned. 4.5 stars.
