The spectacular true story of a pair of unconventional French scientists with two obsessions – each other, and volcanoes. Narrated by Miranda July. Award winner Sundance 2022.
Geochemist Katia and geologist Maurice Krafft met in 1966. In the two decades following, their shared passion took them around the world: from Congo to Colombia to Iceland to America to Japan. “Once you’ve seen an eruption you can’t live without it”, Katia explains. The intrepid couple are apparently unfazed by inherent dangers such as extreme heat, acid lakes and flying boulders, although they occasionally wear heat-resistant silver suits reminiscent of early sci-fi movies. The unconventional Kraffts shot thousands of hours of spectacular – literally red-hot – 16mm footage of spewing lava flows and staggering eruptions. Before their deaths in a volcanic explosion on Japan’s Mount Unzen in 1991, they had significantly expanded the world’s understanding of this natural phenomena. Director Sara Dosa has used their unparalleled, terrifyingly beautiful images, to create a spellbinding celebration with undeniably Herzog-ian overtones of this singular love triangle.

SARA DOSA is an Indie Spirit Award-nominated doc director and award-winning producer. Her directorial credits include The Last Season (2015); The Seer & The Unseen (2019). Among her production credits is the Academy-Award nominated The Edge of Democracy (2019).
Seeing that footage is a lot of what makes Fire of Love a spellbinding experience. Yet the film also tells the enthralling story of two unlikely lives.
Owen Gleiberman, Variety
This has to be one of the most heartwarming movies about scientists ever made, especially as it always honours the red-hot nature in their shared passion.
Nick Allen, RogerEbert.com
It’s a doomed love story on every level, a gorgeous collage of a film in which romance, scientific inquiry and death do a 93-minute dance.
Daniel Fienberg, The Hollywood Reporter
