Take an enthralling trip through 200 years of image making, from the camera obscura to the selfie. A Berlinale and Sundance 2023 winner from the company behind Triangle of Sadness (SFF 2022).
Director Axel Danielson, a production partner with Ruben Östlund, makes his directorial debut, along with co-director Maximilien Van Aertryck. The duo received an Academy Award nomination for their short film,
Ten Meter Tower (SFF 2016). With
Fantastic Machine they take a deep dive into the history of the photographic image. Starting with the first such known picture (a 10-hour exposure), they use a vast array of archival footage to bring us to the present day, encompassing a zillion technological developments and iconic pictures on the way. The result is a clever, fascinating and at times shocking look at the changing influence of imagery across time.
