Take an enthralling trip through 200 years of image making, from the camera obscura to the selfie. A Berlinale and Sundance 2023 winner from the company behind Triangle of Sadness (SFF 2022).
Director Axel Danielson, a production partner with Ruben Östlund, makes his directorial debut, along with co-director Maximilien Van Aertryck. The duo received an Academy Award nomination for their short film, Ten Meter Tower (SFF 2016). With Fantastic Machine they take a deep dive into the history of the photographic image. Starting with the first such known picture (a 10-hour exposure), they use a vast array of archival footage to bring us to the present day, encompassing a zillion technological developments and iconic pictures on the way. The result is a clever, fascinating and at times shocking look at the changing influence of imagery across time.
This searing and shocking examination of our popular culture, where content is king, is strongest when it scares the viewer.
Robert Daniels, RogerEbert.com
Briskly told while providing an energetic ode to the last decades of motion picture history, Fantastic Machine is pretty fantastic.
