Austrian filmmaker Peter Hengl’s diabolically twisted family-folk-horror-thriller comes direct to FMO from its world premiere at Tribeca. An Easter get-together with a difference.
When insecure teen Simi arrives at aunt Claudia’s country house for Easter she’s hoping for help with her weight issues. What could be better than support from famous aunt Claudia, a best-selling author of books about nutrition and healthy diets? But something strange is sizzling on the emotional hotplate here. Cousin Filipp is being nasty, Claudia’s increasingly uptight and her new hubby Stefan has wandering eyes and weird thoughts. Hengl’s knockout feature debut turns the screws slowly and with great visual and tonal assurance all the way to a final course you won’t soon forget. Family Dinner is another classy item from executive producer Ant Timpson (FMO hits Come to Daddy, Censor, Deathgasm, Turbo Kid).
It’s finally here, horror fans: The genre’s first great Easter film. And not only that, Austrian writer-director Peter Hengl’s unnerving, dread-filled powder keg of a film is also one of the most impressive genre debuts in years.
Tribeca Film Festival
Family Dinner will capture your attention without breaking a sweat. Pia Hierzegger is mesmerising as the film’s master chef; a fiery-eyed antagonist who you won’t soon forget.
Josh Korngut, Dread Central
Family Dinner unfurls its methodical slow-burn tale in the days leading up to Easter Sunday, centering volatile relationships and strict, peculiar holiday traditions to create deep-seated psychological dread.
Meagan Navarro, Bloody Disgusting
Successfully weaves folk horror with family terror, making viewers question every family member’s true motives.
