A mother and daughter grift their way through post-crisis Spain in this darkly funny Sundance hit from acclaimed multidisciplinary artist Amalia Ulman.
Loosely based on real-life petty-crime duo Justina and Ana Belén, El Planeta finds Leo (Ulman), an in-demand but under-paid stylist, and her unemployed mother María (Ulman's actual mother Ale) unable to make ends meet. They half-heartedly engage in increasingly desperate schemes to maintain their former middle-class lifestyle in the face of looming financial ruin. Scored by renowned New York club kid Chicken, the film boasts a gorgeous, crisp, minimalistic grayscale aesthetic – and a hilarious cameo from cult filmmaker Nacho Vigalondo. Director/writer/producer/star Ulman delivers an iconic, sincere, witty and memorable feature debut, naturally continuing her prior explorations of class, gender and sexuality.
Amalia Ulman eschews kitchen-sink realism for a deadpan vein of black comedy somewhere on the very wide spectrum between Lena Dunham and early Pedro Almodóvar.
Guy Lodge, Variety
Amalia Ulman’s El Planeta is a confection full of arsenic, a deeply felt dramedy whose droll humour and placidly beautiful black-and-white surfaces mask a searing socioeconomic desperation.
Keith Watson, Slant Magazine
