Separated temporarily from husband Jacques Demy, Agnès Varda directed this deeply autobiographic tale of a young mother and her son living a transient existence in Los Angeles.

Single mother Émilie (played by Varda's editor, Sabine Mamou) and her son Martin (played by Varda’s real-life son Mathieu Demy) are struggling to make ends meet in Los Angeles. Life in their rented apartment brings challenges alongside moments of joy: Émilie works as a secretary for a film star but struggles as a newly single woman in a foreign city. Varda infuses Documenteur with the authenticity of a woman who has known heartbreak but has not fallen prey to self-pity. Émilie is down but far from broken and watching her interpret the city offers a refreshingly rare onscreen heroine, and a fascinating take on life in the ‘City of Angels’.

Also screening at the festival is Varda’s last work Varda by Agnès

'Documenteur' conveys Varda’s personal experience with isolation and motherhood is a rare vision of LA that problematises its mythology as a city of dreams.
Dazed
The deeply felt passion coursing through these works speaks not to an outsider’s perspective, but to someone whose insatiable curiosity and creativity inspired unique and natural expressions of itinerant living.
