Bachchan is Vijay, whose militant unionist father (Satyendra Kapoor) was betrayed and driven into exile when Vijay was a boy, leaving him, his brother Ravi (Shashi Kapoor) and their devoutly religious mother Sumitra (Nirupa Roy) to starve on the streets of Mumbai. Years later, Vijay survives as a humble dock worker, but his combative spirit impresses a local crime boss (Iftekhar). Soon he is in charge of gang operations and flush with cash.
