The first widely distributed film directed by an African American woman, Julie Dash’s celebrated drama is presented for its 30th anniversary in a gloriously restored print.
In 1902, the Peazant family gathers at their traditional island home one last time before migrating north for a better life. Over the course of a day of celebration at the beach, long-simmering tensions within the family come to a boil as they grapple with the legacy of slavery as well as their own heritage and survival. Based on Dash’s own family history, this landmark film is remarkable on many levels. It is a wonderful tribute to the Gullah people of the Sea Islands of South Carolina, their proudly preserved West African culture and their creole dialect. It is also a daring and powerful film with stunningly beautiful cinematography, a poetically non-linear story and a great ensemble cast.
Daughters is an unparalleled and unprecedented achievement in terms of both world cinema and African aesthetics. In this it extends ten thousand-fold the canon of Black film.
Greg Tate, The Village Voice
A mysterious, fabular and sometimes dreamlike film with its own theatrical poise.
Peter Bradshaw, the Guardian
A film of spellbinding visual beauty.
Stephen Holden, New York Times
