Acclaimed UK filmmaker Andrea Arnold (Red Road, SFF 2007; Wuthering Heights, SFF 2012) makes her documentary debut in this Cannes 2021-selected portrait of bovine life.
On a farm somewhere in England, a calf is born and then soon separated from its parent. The mother, Luma, returns to a routine of milking and grazing, while the calf joins its fellow youngsters. So begins the cycle of life on a dairy farm, the daily grind liberally strewn with moos, milk, mud and shit. Arnold’s camera captures the passing of the seasons, as bright sunshine replaces chill rain. The calf matures; the mother grows old. Luma’s gaze, seemingly straight through the camera into the audience, prompts the question: what, if anything, is she feeling or thinking? Cow, a passion project for Arnold, has been tagged, ‘social realism for animals’. Indeed, this wholly observational, narration-less, rhythmically industrial documentary has an eerie kitchen sink-like feel, making for unsettling but compelling viewing.
The British auteur's first nonfiction feature may be a departure in many respects, but her distinctively harsh lyricism is still present.
Guy Lodge, Variety
There is something very heartfelt and committed about Andrea Arnold’s film: a poignancy and intimacy.
Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
