A scalpel-sharp social drama in which Ray slyly dissects the lifestyle, politics and emerging corporate culture permeating Kolkata’s middle class.
Barun Chanda brings wit, charisma and a sense of underlying anxiety to the role of Shyamal, an ambitious manager at a British-owned firm manufacturing fans. Sharmila Tagore is brilliant as his sister-in-law Tutul, who is visiting the city for the first time. Shyamal wants to show off his sophistication and accomplishments – there is clearly an unspoken attraction – but an unforeseen glitch at the factory threatens his career and his dreams. In typical Ray fashion, there is great empathy for the characters despite the clinical observation of their foibles. Lively editing enhances simmering domestic and workplace tensions and the revolutionary activity gripping Kolkata at the time yields fascinating political subtext.35mm print courtesy of the Packard Humanities Institute Collection at the Academy Film Archive.
