History, identity, and performance collide in a hypnotic black-and-white drama by celebrated Thai experimentalist Anocha Suwichakornpong (By the Time it Gets Dark, SFF 2017). Berlin (Forum) 2021.
The starting point for Suwichakornpong's dreamy tone poem is Kanchanaburi in Thailand's west. Four young friends arrive to visit a memorial site for POWs and civilians who perished while building the infamous ‘Death Railway' in World War II. Elsewhere in the forest a woman finds herself alone after the sudden disappearance of a friend. Casting aside conventional ideas of plot and narrative, Suwichakornpong takes us on a journey that invites us to consider how official history, collective memory and personal experience inform and shape creative acts such as the very film we are watching. Superbly filmed in monochrome and with stunning sound design, Come Here is something special for the senses.
The permeating artistry of the images and the excellent job done in the production values deem it an interesting watch.
Panos Kotzathanasis, Asian Film Pulse
Suwichakornpong is a growing master of temporal shifts, her work not so much fragmented as machine-cut into precise, interlocking patterns.
