Closing Night Gala 2018
Hearts Beat Loud
In this joyous, heart-warming indie comedy, one-time musician Frank (Nick Offerman, Parks and Recreation, The Little Hours, SFF 2017) forms an unlikely band with his daughter Sam (Kiersey Clemons, Dope, SFF 2015) before she leaves for college. Single dad Frank runs a struggling old-school record store in Red Hook, Brooklyn, which he’s about to lose, despite the support of his love interest landlord Leslie (Toni Collette). All Frank really wants to do is reconnect with his musically-gifted yet serious daughter, whose plans involve studying pre-med at a prestigious college – and definitely not writing music with her ageing hipster dad. Frank insists they do a weekly “jam sesh” together, and surreptitiously records their efforts. When he uploads one of the songs onto a streaming service, it becomes a minor hit and Frank’s musical aspirations are revived. Now, he only has to convince Sam that it’s worth giving up college so they can give their band a shot at the big time. With an excellent supporting cast including Ted Danson, Sasha Lane and Blythe Danner, Hearts Beat Loud is an exuberant comedy stacked with great tunes.
