This Sundance comedic drama sees a college grad (writer-director Cooper Raiff) fall for a local mum (Dakota Johnson) when enterprising as a bar and bat mitzvah party starter.
Andrew (Raiff) has just finished college and without immediate prospects, moves back in with his New Jersey family. There, he discovers he has a rare skill: he has an exceptional talent for being a bar and bat mitzvah “party starter” for local teens. When he meets Domino (Johnson) and her daughter Lola, Andrew sees a future he finds extremely appealing, but one not without complications. With a stellar supporting cast of comedy greats including Brad Garrett (Everybody Loves Raymond) and Leslie Mann (This Is 40), you can bet hilarity follows. Genuinely funny, romantic and moving, Raiff’s follow up to the SXSW winner Freshman Year, confirms a talent with a bright future.
Every life-sized beat of the 24-year-old’s first two features has struck me as wry and true in a way that makes the stories around them feel all the more honest for their empathy. If that would be a promising start under any circumstances, it’s an especially nifty magic trick at a time when the world is fucked to a degree that anything nice seems like it must be lying to you somehow.
David Ehrlich, IndieWire
[Cha Cha Real Smooth] sings with a wondrous candor and an unforced dramatic rhythm that turns it mightily irresistible.
Carlos Aguilar, The Wrap
A sweet, sensitive comedy-drama populated by likeable characters who feel things deeply and are searching for contentment, which is always just out of reach.
Tie Grierson, Screen International
It’s hard to find movies—no matter their scope—that grasp and depict the human experience with the kind of honesty and dexterity Raiff has committed to the screen so far.
Jake Kring-Schreifels, The Film Stage
