Direct from Cannes Un Certain Regard, director Justin Chon and Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl) star in this moving and timely story of a family man suddenly facing deportation.
Adopted as a child from Korea, Antonio LeBlanc (Chon) has spent virtually his entire life in the Louisiana bayou. Married to the love of his life Kathy (Vikander), he is determined to be the best father possible to his stepdaughter Jessie. Though it's a struggle to get by, this family is filled with love. But Antonio's past is not behind him, and he is shocked to learn he is in danger of being deported to Korea, a country he no longer has any connection to. A relentless, irrational and merciless system deems this very American man an unwanted immigrant. Working with material he is clearly impassioned by, and inspired by many true stories, Chon has made a film that will resonate far beyond the bayou.
It is both a passionate exposé of a serious injustice and a big emotional ride that is also prepared to take some interesting risks in its journey.
Lee Marshall, Screen International
The harsh loopholes in American immigration legislation that allow adoptees who have spent their entire lives in the country to be deported over paperwork irregularities provide a sturdy narrative spine for Blue Bayou.
David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter
Blue Bayou may just be arriving at the perfect time, then—both for its rising director, and for the moral emergency it so heartbreakingly exposes.
David Canfield, Vanity Fair
