Set on Ingmar Bergman’s island home, multi-award winner director Mia Hansen-Løve’s Cannes-selected film stars Tim Roth, Vicky Krieps, Mia Wasikowska and Anders Danielsen Lie.
Renowned director Bergman lived and worked on Fårö for over 40 years. Today it is a place of pilgrimage for his many fans and the setting for Hansen-Løve's (Things to Come) latest – a film within a film within a filmmaker's oeuvre. An American filmmaking couple arrive on the remote island with plans to write and relax. Tony (Roth, Pulp Fiction), a confident and established filmmaker, sets up his desk and starts work. His less-credentialled partner, Chris (Krieps, Phantom Thread), finds it harder to settle. Outside the window, Fårö's wild summer beauty beckons, and the couple – separately and together – head out to explore. Time passes and the lines between fiction and reality cleverly begin to blur, against the backdrop of the island and the Swedish maestro's life and work.
Watching… Bergman Island, I felt a new reverence for Hansen-Løve’s talent – she sweeps you up and brings the movie to a slow boil.
