Indigenous artist and photographer Tracey Moffatt’s only feature to date consists of three ghost stories told in a thrillingly original, highly stylised, fashion.

In the tradition of multi-part movies about ghosts, and especially evoking Masaki Kobayashi’s Kwaidan (1964), Bedevil tells three tales of the supernatural. In the first story, Mr. Chuck, Shelley (Diana Davidson), a white woman, and Rick (Jack Charles), an elderly Indigenous man, recall when the swampy area near where they live was haunted by the ghost of an American soldier. Story two, Choo Choo Choo Choo, flits between past and present as a woman recalls her life as a young wife (played by the director) when the railway track near where she lived was haunted by a blind girl. Finally, Lovin' the Spin I'm In is set in a small coastal town and depicts the haunting of a warehouse owned by a Greek-Australian (Lex Marinos). Bedevil is mainly staged in wholly artificial studio settings, and is the first Australian feature directed by an Indigenous woman. None of the stories unfold conventionally; all are fragmented as they shift between contemporary documentary style and stylised reflections of a ghostly past.
