Alice Englert’s Sundance-selected debut stars Jennifer Connelly, Ben Whishaw and Englert herself, in a dark comedy about spiritual retreats and a turbulent mother-daughter relationship.
Lucy (Connelly) is a former child actor trying to resolve some of her traumas by attending a therapeutic sanctuary run by new-age guru Elon (Whishaw). Before going off the grid, Lucy reaches out to her stunt-performer daughter Dylan (Englert), who’s shooting a film in New Zealand and experiencing her own set of challenges. From the outset, Lucy struggles to find tranquillity – she’s irritated by the other attendees and is particularly rankled by the celebrity model Beverly (Dasha Nekrasova), and is poised to explode. Meanwhile, Dylan has her own difficulties on set, particularly with the leading actor. Mother and daughter must find each other for mutual support, and confront the realities of their own relationship. Established actor Englert draws engaging, committed performances from this impressive cast in what is an intelligent, incisive and very funny first feature film.
