A lonely zoo director conceals the death of his prize attraction – an endangered leopard – in order to stave off an uncertain future in this award-winning Turkish drama.
Fikret (Uğur Polat) has run a decrepit public zoo in the Turkish capital of Ankara for 22 years. Once an idealistic animal lover, he is now a bitter divorcée drifting listlessly through middle age. The zoo is under threat of being bought out by a group of overseas investors and turned into a crass theme park. Only the presence of an endangered indigenous leopard protected by the government is holding up the deal. When the cat suddenly dies one night, Fikret smuggles the body out and buries it, hoping to delay the closing of the zoo as long as possible. In his smart, quirky debut feature, Emre Kayis finds a balance between broodingly personal drama, black comedy and a wry critique of capitalist greed.
Kayiş’s debut feature wraps a poignant Kafkaesque scenario in a Kaurismäkian package… a sharp metaphor for the contemporary Turkish state.
