This mesmerising documentary, winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance 2022, focuses on two brothers who devote their lives to rescuing New Delhi’s black kites.
Nadeem and Saud live in a largely Muslim neighbourhood, scraping a living making soap dispensers, but their true passion is caring for birds. For almost 20 years, the brothers have been collecting the injured creatures and painstakingly nursing them back to health. The densely populated city, full of creatures and rife with tensions, is the clattering background to their quiet dedication – one fuelled by the Muslim belief that feeding kites will bring them a religious reward or sawab. Shaunak Sen’s enthralling film, beautifully shot by Ben Bernhard and his team, reveals the many sacrifices the brothers have made as it reflects on the big environmental issues in play. Winner L’Œil d’Or for best documentary at Cannes 2022.

Shortlisted for the Sustainable Future Award.

Cast
Nadeem Shehzad started treating black kites with his younger brother Mohammad Saud in the Chawri Bazar area of New Delhi in 2003. Since then, they have attended to more than 20,000 injured birds. Nadeem was recently appointed as an Honorary Wildlife Warden of Delhi, and in 2021 spent three months in the US for training with bird rescue organisations. Today, Nadeem continues to treat black kites and other birds of prey through the organisation he and his brother set up in 2010: Wildlife Rescue.
