Keke Palmer (Hustlers), Jonny Lee Miller and Common star in a riveting thriller about an enslaved woman who escapes from a Georgia plantation – only to discover that it’s actually 1973.
Palmer is powerful as the title character, who flees enslavement on a plantation in Georgia after a violent clash with her cruel captor (a suitably unhinged Miller). When Alice finally escapes, she is shocked to stumble onto a highway in 1973 where she is rescued by a truck driving activist, Frank (Common). At first disoriented by the modern world, Alice quickly learns to savour her newfound freedom... and plot revenge and rescue of her several loved ones still held captive. Writer-director Krystin Ver Linden’s debut feature is a touching, and exhilarating, meditation on Black liberation and a stylish tribute to Blaxploitation cinema. Inspired by true events.
Keke Palmer is phenomenal as an escaped plantation slave who discovers it's 1973 in this crowd-pleaser that sprints toward its big cheers.
Amy Nicholson, Variety
Palmer makes for a compelling presence as she charts Alice’s arc from innocence to experience.
