In the largest law student mock court competition in Africa, the next generation struts its stuff and learns what it means to fight for a cause. Selected Hot Docs 2022.
Every year, over 100 of the brightest law students from across the African continent gather to compete in the prestigious African Human Rights Moot Competition. We follow four key teams from Cape Town, Cairo, Kampala, and Nairobi, as they hone their arguments and make their way to Gaborone, Botswana for an intense week of debate and bonding. The rights of refugees are a central topic and participants must argue both as applicant and respondent. The finale, in front of Botswana’s highest court, is intense, as are the stories of the individual students we hear along the way. Directed by Shameela Seedat whose debut film, Whispering Truth to Power
, screened in SFF 2018.
African Moot is one of two films screening in the festival (also
No Simple Way Home) from the Generation Africa program, a project by a South African non-profit media company (STEPS) that centres on the lived experiences of African youth.
