Romance blooms between a fading actress and a young misfit in this offbeat charmer from Nicolette Krebitz (Wild, SFF 2016). Presented in competition at Berlinale 2022.
Anna (Sophie Rois, 3, SFF 2011), a fierce feminist and successful actor, is now ageing and struggling to find work. One night she is unexpectedly but fatefully mugged by a young man, Adrian (Milan Herms), who serendipitously becomes her new acting pupil. Shunted between foster families and an expert at petty crimes, Adrian hasn’t known love. Anna tenderly takes on the role of teacher, mother and, before long, a mutual attraction develops. Their relationship offers Adrian affection for the first time in his life, while Anna enjoys a breath of youthful fresh air. Featuring endearing performances from Rois and Herms and a very charming supporting role from Udo Kier, Krebitz’s sophomore feature is wonderfully whimsical and warm.
A joyful, transgressively liberating ode to cinema and the way an unexpected passion can make societal barriers disappear.
Jay Weissberg, The Film Verdict
With her striking, blade-cut features and aloof, watchful air, Austrian actor Rois projects an assured maturity that reads protectively maternal in some scenes and sensually forthright in others.
Guy Lodge, Variety
