Jane Eyre
Cary Fukunaga brings a steely vision to this
compelling adaptation of Charlotte Brontë's renowned novel, drawing
deep from the gothic sensibility of Jack Clayton's The
Innocents and exhibiting the assured style that won him best
director at Sundance for his very different debut feature Sin
Nombre. When Jane Eyre (Mia Wasikowska) is sent to work as a
governess at Thornfield Manor alongside housekeeper Mrs Fairfax
(Judi Dench), she is intensely attracted to and repelled by the
singularly abrupt and intelligent master of the house, Rochester
(Michael Fassbender, star of SFF 2008 Official Competition winner
Hunger, is positively swoon-worthy). Following her
international success with Tim Burton's Alice and Lisa Cholodenko's
The Kids Are Alright (SFF Closing Night 2010), Australian
actress Wasikowska augments her spectral beauty with the perfect
combination of fragility and independence in a performance that
cements her reputation as a sparkling new talent and will make
empathetic bosoms heave the world over.
