End of Animal

There's almost nothing in contemporary cinema to compare with Jo Sung-hee's stunning debut. On a lonely stretch of road a cab driver and his pregnant passenger, Sun-yeong, pick up a possibly psychic and potentially dangerous young man who counts down to zero and then disappears. At the same instant all electrical and mechanical devices stop working. That's just the start of an utterly riveting drama that finds Sun-yeong encountering a succession of deeply damaged strangers on what she hopes is the path to safety. Framed within the conventions of a minimalist road movie, End of Animal is an entirely unconventional odyssey into dark and disturbing aspects of human nature. A parable about confession and redemption? An allegory for the End of Days? Any way you look at it, End of Animal is a once-seen-never-forgotten motion picture experience that will Freak You Out, slowly and very surely.
